Melasma or Cholasma is a form of hyperpigmentation which presents as uneven areas or patches of skin that are darker than the surrounding skin. Melasma is common in pregnant or pre-menopausal women and those who are using oral contraception or hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Common areas that are affected include the upper cheeks, nose, lips and forehead.
Melasma is caused by the increased stimulation of skin pigment(melanin) produced by female hormones and intense sun exposure as well as genetic predisposition.
We offer a variety of treatments for melasma including laser therapy, Obagi blue peel radiance, Obagi Nu-Derm system and Obagi blue peel. We can also provide advice on cosmetic camouflage.
