Crow’s feet is a term used to describe the lines the radiate outwards from the outside corner of the eye (like the foot of a crow). These lines are typically most pronounced when a person is squinting, laughing or smiling. In older clients these lines may be present even when the face is at rest
The orbicularis oculi is a facial muscle that enables us to close our eyelids. With increasing age, the frequent contraction of this muscle during facial expression leads to the formation of crow’s feet. Factors such as smoking and excessive sun exposure can exacerbate the appearance of this cosmetic concern.
Typically, these facial lines first become evident in our 30’s. Initially these lines are dynamic in nature (evident during facial expression). As the ageing process advances crow’s feet can develop into static limes meaning that they are visible even when the face is at rest.
Botox® injections are an effective treatment to reduce /eliminate the appearance of dynamic frown lines. For static and deeper facial lines, Botox® combined with dermal filler can achieve pleasing results. Treatment alternatives to Botox include microneedling (Dermapen, Dermastamp and Dermaroller), chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser treatments.
Avoiding excessive sun exposure / use of sunbeds / regular use of SPF50 can help prevent the premature development of frown lines. Also avoiding smoking can make a considerable difference to the appearance of this cosmetic concern.
