Excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating is a common disorder that can cause considerable embarrassment and inconvenience. Symptoms vary from mild to severe and can affect the face, arms, chest, groin, the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

What causes Excessive sweating?

There are two types of hyperhidrosis; primary and secondary. Secondary hyperhidrosis is linked to the use of certain medications, anxiety, infection, low blood sugar levels or pregnancy.

Primary hyperhidrosis is more difficult to treat as there is no known specific cause of the problem. However, there are treatments available that can significantly reduce the symptoms and their associated distress.

What impact does excessive sweating have on people?

Hyperhidrosis can significantly impact quality of life affecting social, psychological, and physical functioning. Social contact may be avoided due to embarrassment and shame as the symptoms may be visible to others (i.e. large wet patches on clothing), certain physical tasks may become difficult to perform as excessive moisture on the palms of the hands can compromise the ability to grip (i.e. driving, writing).

What treatment options are available for hyperhidrosis?

At Croydon Cosmetic Clinic, we offer Botox® for excessive sweating not controlled by conventional measures. Botox® is a safe and effective treatment that can be injected directly into areas affected by the excessive sweating. The procedure takes approximately 10-15 minutes to perform.  Clinical research has demonstrated that Botox® can achieve an 85% reduction in sweating and a difference can be experienced with two to four days following treatment and full affect within two weeks. The results of treatment can last approximately six months before repeat injections are required.

What are the possible side effects?

Possible side effects include bruising at the injection site. If injected for palmar hyperhidrosis ( hyperhidrosis affecting the palms of the hands), a slight weakening  of  the hand muscles may be experienced but this complication is rare.

Who performs the procedure?

The procedure is performed by Dr Baba, a highly trained and experienced aesthetic doctor who is also a senior trainer for this procedure at London Aesthetic Academy (www.londonaestheticacademy.co.uk)
