Rosacea is a common, benign long-term skin condition that causes redness to the face. Individuals over the age of 30 are typically affected.
Rosacea typically affects the central aspect of the face i.e. the forehead, cheeks, chin and the lower portion of the nose. It usually presents as skin discolouration (redness) but pimples, swelling, and thread veins are all part of the condition. In severe disease, the nose can become enlarged and red, this is known as rhinophyma.
The exact cause of rosacea is not known. Possible triggers include; exposure to extreme temperatures, strenuous exercise, psychological stress, severe sunburn and menopause. Alcohol, caffeine as well as spicy food and foods high in histamines have also been linked to this condition.
Rosacea cannot be cured but it can be effectively managed through reducing the appearance of its symptoms. The treatments we offer include topical and oral antibiotic agents, Obagi Rosa Clear System and laser therapy. Treatment outcomes for rosacea vary depending on the severity of the condition.
